Counting in Shu

Language overview

Forty-two in Shu Shu is the language of the nation of Shu Han bordered to the north by Ravka and to the west by Kerch, which it is connected to via land bridges in the Grishaverse world of Leigh Bardugo’s books Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows. The Shu language appears in the second season of the Netflix series Shadow and Bone released on March, 16 2023. While the language itself has been created by Jessie Sams, its writing system has been designed by Christian Thalmann. The Shu language is derived from Chinese Pinyin, Mongolian, Russian and several Central Asian languages such as Kazakh, Uzbek, and Kyrgyz. When writing Shu, the syllable blocks are written from top to bottom and left to right, with punctuation marks coming in between.

Shu numerals

The Shu glyphs are written top to bottom when composed, the ten glyph is on the top, while a composed form of the unit glyph is set on the bottom. The glyph for one hundred [100] is composed with the glyph for [1] on the left, and the glyph for [0] on the right. The glyph for one hundred and one [101] is composed with the glyph for [1] on the left for the hundred, and repeated on the right for the unit.

Shu numbering rules

Now that you’ve had a gist of the most useful numbers, let’s move to the writing rules for the tens, the compound numbers, and why not the hundreds, the thousands and beyond (if possible).

  • I don’t know much of the Shu numbers apart from its glyphs, so stay tuned, I will add content to this page as soon as I get more data.
