Armenian numbering rules
Now that you’ve had a gist of the most useful numbers, let’s move to the writing rules for the tens, the compound numbers, and why not the hundreds, the thousands and beyond (if possible).
- Numbers from zero to ten are specific words, namely զրո (zro) [0], մեկ (mek) [1], երկու (erkow) [2], երեք (erek’) [3], չորս (čors) [4], հինգ (hing) [5], վեց (vec’) [6], յոթ (yot’) [7], ութ (owt’) [8], ինը (inë) [9], and տաս (tas) [10].
- From eleven to nineteen, the numbers are built by putting the old Armenian word for ten (տասն (tasn)), then the digit with no space: տասնմեկ (tasnmek) [11], տասներկու (tasnerkow) [12], տասներեք (tasnerek’) [13], տասնչորս (tasnčors) [14], տասնհինգ (tasnhing) [15], տասնվեց (tasnvec’) [16], տասնյոթ (tasnyot’) [17], տասնութ (tasnowt’) [18], and տասնինը (tasninë) [19].
- The tens have specific names based on the digits roots followed by the suffix -սուն (-sown), except for ten and twenty: տաս (tas) [10], քսան (k’san) [20], երեսուն (eresown) [30], քառասուն (k’aṙasown) [40], հիսուն (hisown) [50], վաթսուն (vat’sown) [60], յոթանասուն (yot’anasown) [70], ութսուն (owt’sown) [80], and իննսուն (innsown) [90].
- The compound numbers are built by putting the ten followed by the unit separated with a space (e.g.: երեսուն հինգ (eresown hing) [35], յոթանասուն ութ (yot’anasown owt’) [78]).
- The word for hundred is հարյուր (haryowr), one thousand is հազար (hazar). Hundreds, thousands and bigger numbers are built the same way, i.e. by setting the multiplier, then a space and the scale name, except when the multiplier is one (e.g.: հարյուր (haryowr) [100], երկու հարյուր (erkow haryowr) [200], երեք հարյուր (erek’ haryowr) [300], հինգ հազար վեց հարյուր երեսուն (hing hazar vec’ haryowr eresown) [5,630]).
- Armenian language uses the short scale for big numbers, where every new word greater than a million is 1,000 times bigger than the previous term. One million is միլիոն (milion), then one billion (109) is միլիարդ (miliard), and one trillion (1012), տրիլիոն (trilion).
